Isu strategis yang dihadapi di dalam fokus P2M (Penelitian dan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat) ini adalah isu pemanasan global (global warming) serta perubahan iklim (climate change). Terjadinya pemanasan global menuntut kita semua untuk mengubah paradigma pembangunan dan tak dapat menghindarkan diri dari kewajiban mengimplementasikan konsep pembangunan yang lebih ramah terhadap lingkungan atau lebih dikenal sebagai Sustainable Development (Pembangunan Berkelanjutan).
Konsep Sustainable Development yang paling banyak diterima adalah The Brundtland Definition yaitu “pembangunan yang memenuhi kebutuhan saat ini tanpa mengorbankan kemampuan generasi mendatang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan mereka‟. Deklarasi Rio de Janeiro tahun 1992 telah mengadopsi definisi ini, serta memperkenalkan konsep tiga dimensi yang mengakui bahwa Sustainable Development merupakan keseimbangan antara dimensi-dimensi: Environmental Protection Sustainability, Economic Growth Sustainability & Social Sustainability Development.
Ketiga hal tersebut diterapkan sebagai sustainable di Petra Christian University dalam mendukung keberlangsungan lingkungan hidup.
Research Focus
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SUSTAINABILITY
Kegiatan di dalam lingkup ini dilakukan dalam kaitan dengan penelitian untuk menjaga kelestarian lingkungan agar dapat menjaga kebutuhan generasi saat ini tanpa mengorbankan kebutuhan generasi yang akan datang. Penelitian difokuskan dalam hal energi yang terbarukan, penghematan energi, bangunan hijau serta pengurangan emisi karbon.
Dalam pertemuan negara-negara G20, isu terkait perubahan iklim juga menjadi perhatian. Isu ini diangkat pada beberapa working group. Salah satu working group G20 yang banyak membahas isu terkait penanganan perubahan iklim adalah Climate Sustainability Working Group (CSWG). Negara-negara G20 juga melihat penanganan perubahan iklim dengan menerapkan prinsip berkelanjutan.
ECONOMIC GROWTH SUSTAINABILITY
Dalam pidato di depan Sidang Majelis Umum PBB beberapa waktu lalu, Presiden RI Ir. Joko Widodo mengingatkan pentingnya mengenai pemberdayaan negara berkembang yang mendorong inovasi teknologi dalam membangun ekonomi dunia yang berkelanjutan. Perkembangan era ekonomi industrial telah bergeser ke era informasi dan kini beralih menuju era ekonomi kreatif.
Hal yang paling penting dalam ekonomi kreatif adalah tumbuhnya kekuatan ide yang ditransformasi menjadi nilai ekonomi. Berbeda dengan sumber daya alam yang apabila dieksplorasi makin lama makin habis, tidak begitu halnya dengan ide kreatif yang tidak akan pernah habis dieksploitasi, malah sebaliknya nilainya makin meningkat. Era ekonomi baru yang mengintensifkan informasi dan kreativitas dengan mengandalkan ide dan stock of knowledge dari sumber daya manusia sebagai faktor produksi utama dalam kegiatan ekonomi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian difokuskan untuk mengembangkan ekonomi industri kreatif, rantai pasokan hijau, produksi, pengadaan dan desain kemasan yang ramah lingkungan yang dapat menghasilkan Economic Growth Sustainability.
SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT
Indonesia merupakan negara kepulauan yang memiliki keragaman budaya yang berbeda antara satu suku/ etnis dengan yang lainnya. Konflik antar ras/suku/agama yang masih terjadi di beberapa tempat merupakan bukti bahwa toleransi budaya belum disadari, dihayati dan dipraktikkan oleh masyarakat.
Kebudayaan adalah suatu hal yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dalam kehidupan manusia. Kebudayaan tidak akan ada tanpa manusia, sebaliknya manusia tanpa kebudayaan tidak akan bisa bertahan dalam mengarungi kehidupan. Kebudayaan terbentuk dari ciptaan hidup dalam jangka Panjang perjalanan suatu bangsa. Bidang-bidang Budaya dan Masyarakat yang menjadi salah satu fokus P2M UK Petra yang diarahkan kepada penyetaraan gender, penanggulangan isu-isu sosial dalam hal rasism, pendidikan, dan pembinaan perdamaian.
